The Bean Trees: Journal 4

Dear Gabby,

I really like the Bean Trees so far. Even though its only had a few major plots, I still find it interesting. All the characters are really very funny, but my favorite characters would have to be Lou Ann and Estevan. Lou Ann is always worrying about something and she's also very superstitious. Lou Ann is not a boring character, and she's insanely clumsy, so it's funny to read about all the accidents she has. Estevan on the other hand has a very different sense of humor. When Estevan was first introduced in the book, he sounded like a very serious man. Throughout the book he has proven to actually be a classy guy but can still be casual enough to make a joke. I really like how Barbara Kingsolver has written The Bean Trees, because the story it self is actually realistic. I feel like I can actually relate to the plots, because these are plots that can actually happen, they're not one of those types of plots that are not realistic. When you think about it a lot of books have outrageous plots that would never happen in a million years. But the plots in The Bean Trees are realistic and have kept me interested, and hopefully it has a really good ending.

Dear Cecelia,

I believe that Lou Ann is superstitious and overly concerned becuase of her relationship with Angel. Earlier in the book she tells Taylor that she was in the desert with Angel and Angel's friend she got drunk and missed a meteor shower that didn't happen. Thus making Lou Ann concerned about her health and people's health around her seeing as how she missed this meteor shower when she became inebriated. The Bean Trees is a realistic story because today some people are hiding immigrants becuase the place they used to live in has became a dangerous environment. So Mattie hiding immigrants in her shop is something that can be related in today's society with many immigrants coming over here and looking for a job to start a new life.
