The Kite Runner - Journal 3

At this point of the book, I think this is the saddest part, but I could be mistaken. I feel so sorry for Hassan. He may be a fictional character but my heart seriously goes out children and people like him. So loyal and honest, I don’t think he deserved to die that way. I was obviously really hard on Amir, when he found out all these secrets kept from him, when he was talking to Rahim Khan. As I was reading I was really drawn to the book and couldn’t stop reading, I think this is my favorite part of the book. I’m really enjoying it, even though it’s insanely sad, but what really gets me is that all these unfortunate people are actually living in these conditions. At first I wasn’t really a fan of Amir, but throughout the book, I guess you can say I kind of “grew with the character” and really learned to like Amir. He is actually my favorite character now, mainly because he sees himself as a coward, but yet he still found the courage to go find Sohrab. I think that Amir is actually a lot like Hassan, because by looking for Sohrab, he’s remaining loyal to him by keeping his son safe. This leads me to believe Amir has a good heart, and I can’t wait to see on what kind of road his courage puts him on in the end.

The Bean Trees Journal 6

Dear Gabby,

In the Bean Trees, Taylor is fighting to be Turtle's legal guardian. I believe Taylor is going to end up with Turtle because she's grown very attached to Turtle, and she's going all the way to Oklahoma to legalize Turtle's adoption. Taylor really couldn't have really done any of this without the help of her friends. The part of the book I’ve found most memorable so far is when Taylor is driving Esperanza and Estevan to Oklahoma, and she ask them if they would want to go to the Sanctuary Church or go spend another day with her. I believe so far this is most memorable because when they accept to spend another day with her, it’s just showing another example of Esperanza and Estevan’s loyalty towards Taylor. Taylor having her friend's help, reminds me of how my friends have been such a support me. Like Taylor, they helped me get through rough times that would not have been able to get through alone. I just really like all the characters of the book, because they all have this sort of highlight to them that makes them stand out. I've never read a book with characters like these; they have this serious yet humorous tone to them.

The Bean Trees: Journal 4

Dear Gabby,

I really like the Bean Trees so far. Even though its only had a few major plots, I still find it interesting. All the characters are really very funny, but my favorite characters would have to be Lou Ann and Estevan. Lou Ann is always worrying about something and she's also very superstitious. Lou Ann is not a boring character, and she's insanely clumsy, so it's funny to read about all the accidents she has. Estevan on the other hand has a very different sense of humor. When Estevan was first introduced in the book, he sounded like a very serious man. Throughout the book he has proven to actually be a classy guy but can still be casual enough to make a joke. I really like how Barbara Kingsolver has written The Bean Trees, because the story it self is actually realistic. I feel like I can actually relate to the plots, because these are plots that can actually happen, they're not one of those types of plots that are not realistic. When you think about it a lot of books have outrageous plots that would never happen in a million years. But the plots in The Bean Trees are realistic and have kept me interested, and hopefully it has a really good ending.
